What is freesat™?

The BBC and ITV have joined forces and created a new venture called freesat™.  Freesat™ broadcasts standard definition (SD) and High definition (HD) to the whole of the UK through the same satellite as sky which means, if you already have a sky dish you are most likely able to get freesat™

freesat™ was set up to make sure that everyone has the best of free digital TV, no matter where they live in the UK.

freesat™ came together formally in May 2007 as a joint venture between the BBC and ITV. So whilst they are a brand new service, they've actually been around for a while. In fact freesat™ is a "not-for-profit" company owned by the nation’s two most popular broadcasters.

We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy free digital TV, plus free HD programmes, with no contract and no subscription, just a one-off payment

Freesat™ HD?

HD stands for “High definition” which means brilliant quality viewing. Up to five times more picture detail gives you deeper, richer, more lifelike colours and amazing sound. >All you need is an HD Ready TV connected to one of our freesat™ HD digital boxes, or a TV with freesat™ HD built in (coming soon).

What is HD?

HD is the latest in a long line of major improvements in television technology, which has moved from black-and-white analogue to widescreen colour digital over the last 50 years. HD gives you exceptionally clear, crisp pictures with vivid colours and up to five times more detail than standard definition. HD provides a massive improvement in picture resolution, creating more vibrant images and an immersive viewing experience.
